Fitzcarraldo
Sorry to Bother You
This film will be introduced by ‘Film Philosophy’ expert Michael Thomas:
“Boots Riley’s ‘Sorry to Bother You’ is an absurdist dark comedy with elements of magical realism and science fiction inspired by the world of telemarketing. In it, we follow Cassisus Green through an existential journey in which his search for meaning leads him up the corporate ladder of sales, pitting him against his conscience and solidarity with friends and allies. In this talk, Thomas will highlight some moments of change in the film that point him towards the ways that we are transformed as we attempt to navigate the need to pay the rent and the desire for meaning.”
Battleship Potemkin
Currently working as a guest researcher at the University of Amsterdam, Pyotr Safronov is investigating digital care in the context of interactions between humans and machines. In addition, he participates in several grassroots projects, such as the creation of a new constitution for Russia in the future. He cofounded the artistic group Lepista Nuda (lepistanuda.com), delivering multimodal conceptual projects on subjects such as non-human urban landscapes and architecture for the afterlife.’
Battleship Potemkin, a Soviet silent film directed by Sergei Eiseinstein and released in 1925, is regarded as a seminal work of cinema history. The movie was meant to be a memorial to the 1905 Russian Revolution. It was produced in Odessa, which is now in Ukraine, the site of the actual mutiny of sailors. Its five-act, theater-style structure, condensed montage of conflicting shots, and creative use of color and light are all employed to convey a conceptual message that goes beyond any single story. In this talk, Safronov will discuss how Eisenstein’s notion of the movement relates to Hegel’s concept of subjectivity while considering how restlessness is a fundamental aspect of the human situation from a standpoint of the modern(ist) philosophy.’
